The family is considered the basic unit of the parish and parents have an important role to play in the education of their children. They are, after all, their first educators. It is our job as teachers to work with the parents, assisting them in the privileged task of educating their children for life.

Parent/Teacher evenings are held throughout the year. The meetings held at the start of the year are a wonderful opportunity. Teachers can get to know parents and parents can get to know teachers. Each can begin building those relationships that are vital, if true collaboration is to exist between the home and school.

There are also various opportunities for parents to actively assist in the classroom. This is to be encouraged. Interested and helpful parents are a real asset in any school. Some things that parents may wish to do:

  • Contributing or collecting resources

  • Supporting themes or units

  • Assisting small groups

  • Helping in the library

The list could go on . . . .As in most areas, parents take their lead from the school Staff. Teachers at St Joseph’s have a long tradition of involving themselves in school and parish activities. Your co-operation in this regard is anticipated.
